Soaring Oil Prices Trigger Daily Necessities Hikes: Starting at 5%, Toilet Paper up 20%

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has driven up international oil prices, intensifying the knock-on effects on daily life in Hong Kong and pushing up prices of some daily necessities. Pharmacy industry figures noted that high shipping costs and rising prices of petroleum by-products due to the geopolitical situation and oil price surges have led to price increases for items such as toilet paper and dish soap. A retail industry representative warned that many food and daily goods will also see price hikes of up to 15%, but urged the public not to panic buy, which would only drive prices higher.

Lam Wai-man, Chairman of the Hong Kong & Kowloon Pharmacy Association, told Wen Wei Po that the impact of rising oil prices will unfold in phases. Higher transport costs have already taken immediate effect, with many logistics companies struggling to cover fuel expenses for deliveries. While some are managing for now, freight charges may be raised in the future to offset losses from pricier oil. As a result, prices of toilet paper, paper towels and similar products are set to rise by 20% due to increased shipping costs.

For petroleum-based products like dish soap, price pressures are not yet visible as manufacturers still hold several months of raw material inventory. However, once stockpiles run out, prices of these goods will also rise, creating a cycle of ongoing increases.

Industry: Prolonged Conflict May Disrupt Imports

He pointed out that fuel storage is strictly regulated by warehouse capacity and safety concerns, making large stockpiling impossible. While paper daily necessities do not spoil easily, average households do not overstock, so widespread panic buying is unlikely. Yet toilet paper, being low-priced, will make price hikes more noticeable to the public. He stressed that if the conflict continues, imports of daily goods could be disrupted — “it won’t just be price hikes; many products simply won’t be available at all.”

Lam Chi-chung, General Secretary of the Hong Kong General Union of Retail and Commercial Employees, said many essential food and daily items in Hong Kong are expected to see price increases of 5% to 15% in the short term. If the situation worsens, hikes could reach 20%, and a prolonged conflict may even destabilize the overall consumer price index for daily necessities. He added that Hong Kong relies heavily on imports for most food and daily goods. For agricultural products such as vegetables shipped from the mainland, rising fuel costs for trucking fleets have already created price pressures, which will eventually be passed on to consumers.
